Food in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Well still spending time here often in KL, as I fly in and out for work. So thought it was overdue I do a round up of some of the wide range of dishes and cuisine on offer around the city, and Malaysia in general.

Starting off first with a version of Nasi Lemak. This one does have blue rice, which is not always the case, Nasi Kerabu is the dish that is made with blue coloured rice traditionally. But back to Nasi Lemak, coconut rice served with cucumber slices, peanuts, dried fried anchovies, boiled egg, some spicy sambal, with beef rendang served in the side bowl.

Due to the multicultural mix of Malaysia, the wide range of food comes from Malay, Chinese & Indian cuisines. Above is Chinese style, roasted pork & duck with rice, always a tasty dish.

Next to some Indian food, with some very tender chicken tandoori here with a big garlic naan and dips.

A commonly found dish is Laksa. This comes slightly different depending on where in the country you are, but is generally a curry noodle soup with meat or seafood, always tasty with also some dumplings and boiled egg too.

This Chinese chicken claypot rice restaurant was recently awarded a Michelin bib award for 2025, and the lady was very happy to show me the award which was cool. A well executed tasty dish worthy of the recognition.

Finally, a tribute to the late Anthony Bourdain, who visited Malaysia a few times during his TV career. He ate a couple of times at ‘Aunty Aini’s Garden Cafe’. So we made the special trip out to here, its south of the city, abit near the airport. Here we ordered the classic beef rendang and chicken in coconut milk with turmeric and chilli.
