Well I returned to USA this year thanks to an airline compensation voucher; having been several hours delays last year, so that meant my flight was free! Part of the idea of returning to New York was to catch a game of the T20 Cricket World Cup, but more on that later. First up, here is a fantastic view of the Brooklyn Bridge, taken as I walked over the Manhatten Bridge.
The T20 Cricket World Cup was being held in USA and across the West Indies. Over on Long Island, a temporary venue that could hold 30000 people was built to host some group games. I got to see Canada vs Ireland, in front of a very lacking crowd as cricket has very little following in the USA compared to other major sports. Ireland were the favourites, and opted to bat second, with Canada setting a score of 137/7 off their 20 overs. Ireland started reasonably well in their chase, however Canada bowled very well and kept picking up wickets, they held Ireland to a score of 125/7, to take the Canadians to victory.
On my previous visit the Intrepid Museum was undergoing some improvements, that were now complete so I went to see the retired USS Intrepid aircraft carrier that hosts most of the museum. Of note for me to see was a British Airways Concorde plane that is on display, looking superb here in the sun.
The USS Intrepid has a range of interesting exhibitions onboard showing what life and the military was like onboard the aircraft carrier. Numerous fighter planes are also on display on the desk, but the most fascinating is one of the space shuttles. The Enterprise was the first version of the space shuttle developed in the 1970s and used for test flights before the other shuttles were built.
I also got to catch up with me old uni pal, Will, who lives in Australia, and happened to be in New York at the same time as me. We toured around Brooklyn, walked over the Manhattan Bridge, got to see some of Chinatown and have a good catch up.
In the evening it was time for some baseball, with a trip to the famous Yankee Stadium. The match was New York Yankees against Minnesota Twins, with the Yankees winning 9-5. The result looked like it was going to the Yankees after going up by 4-0 in the very first innings. It was great to see a good crowd and the stadium, after I visited Citi Field and the NY Mets last time I visited New York.
