I took an overnight Amtrak train of around 16 hours (I think) from DC up to the windy city of Chicago, Illinois. Amtrak coach seats are much bigger than the equivalent on a plane, wider with more recline and foot rest, however it was still not the best sleep on the train. When I arrived I immediately started walking around to take in the city.
The great 90s movie ‘The Fugitive’ is set around Chicago, with the elevated train around the city being of note in the film, so this was good to see and reminds me of many scenes in the movie.
On the list of things to do, was try Chicago style deep dish pizza. As you can see here it really is a ‘pizza pie’ with considerable thickness, when compared to other pizzas. It was very filling and abit heavy with all that cheese, but I was glad I tried it.
Next to see around the city centre, this sculpture titled “Cloud Gate”, often nicknamed as the bean, sits in Millenium Park. It is made up of stainless steel plates welded together, and weighs around 100 tons.
A friend recommended I really should take the boat architecture tour downtown. This turned out to be very good advice, with the guide being informative about the huge range of skyscrapers and tall buildings that sit riverside across Chicago. It was a great way to take in more of the city and I also would really say check it out for yourself.
Being a sports fan, I had to take the oppurtunity to visit Wrigley Field and watch a Chicago Cubs baseball game. Wrigley Field is one of the oldest baseball stadiums in the USA, first opening back in 1914.
The seats I had gave a great view of the game, with an impressive colourful sunset adding to the game. Cubs won 5-2 beating San Francisco Giants.
