Sri Lankan Food II

I talked about Sri Lankan food previously when I was here, but there’s such a range and so many dishes that I thought I would share some more. starting with the classic rice and curry:

Another selection of rice and curry from a restaurant in Ella, at this place you could pick which 4 dishes to accompany the rice. This meant you can pick dishes to your liking or try something different to common dishes.  I never get bored from eating curry and rice in Sri Lanka, with it different each time I ordered it in a new location or restaurant.

Next up is the wide variety of snacks and street side bites to eat.  Not sure on the names of some, but I will try and summarise the ones I do know. The donut shaped snack is a savoury donut, called Ulundu Wade (similar to vada in India), made from lentils, which curry leaves and chilli too. The triangle shaped are fried samosas, I can not remember the filling with veg or meat options available. On the right hand side of the photo are more sweet options, with a the white noodle like snack containing the brilliant local jam in the middle. I think this is called Lavariya, with the filling being caramelised coconut. With the cake or muffin looking item being Wandu Appa, a steamed rice flour with coconut milk and jaggery.

This next dish is called Lamprais  (or lumprice). I had this on my list of food to try and I was glad I did get to taste it, as it was rich as the rice has been cooked in stock before being served with the curry and meat. Traditionally it is served all together on the banana leaf, with it being finished off baked together in the banana leaf.  Not available everywhere as it is abit of a special dish with quite abit going into the preparation and cooking of it, so one to look out for.

Next up is the classic common snack of Kottu, which is chopped and friend roti, done well this is a tasty and filling dish, often done with egg or meat too aswell as some chopped vegetables in with it.

Similar to parathas in the South of India, this roti was crispy and fresh, served with excellent chicken curry and great chilli sambol to give some good heat to the curry.
