From Udawalawe we took a shared taxi up to Ella in the hills of Sri Lanka, and home to plenty of tea plantations.

I did visit Ella last time around, but it is a beautiful place to visit with some nice walks nearby, so an easy choice to visit again.

The taxi driver did stop before Ella so we could get out and see the waterfall.

Also had some great Sri Lankan meals in Ella, but I will round up some of the food in another post. Last time I took the train in a few stages from Kandy to Haputale then Ella. This time I would be travelling in the opposite direction down from Ella to Kandy, then on to near Colombo.

It was an early start, but this made for some amazing photographs with the morning cloud and the train seemingly riding above the clouds as it left Ella.

It is often talked about as one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. I don’t think this is wrong as there really are so many great views and landscapes that the train passes.

It is a long day to do the whole journey in one, so I would recommend breaking the journey up if you have time to fully appreciate the views from the train. We got down a little bit before Colombo to take a taxi to Negombo, for a last night next to the beach in Sri Lanka, before a late flight back to India.
