We took a car for the day to get out of Washington DC, and drove a couple of hours out to Shenandoah.
There is a scenic drive to follow along the mountain ridge, with plenty of places to stop off and take in the views or do some short hikes.
We walked down to take in these waterfalls in the forest. It is a vast National Park with lots of different routes and scenic spots to choose from.
This view was from the visitor centre which looks out over this open section to the forest in the distance. It was well worth the drive out to see some of the nature and landscape here, however you will want your own vehicle to be able to get around the large area and stop off at numerous points.
I picked up another souvenir for my backpack, but have nearly ran out of space to sew any more patches on my bag now though.
