Spent a couple of weeks around the Puerto Vallarta, Bucerias, Sayulita areas of the west coast in Jalisco and Nayarit states. Whilst the town of Puerto Vallarta itself is a busy tourist town the surrounding area has numerous scenic and quiet beaches to enjoy.
One of the popular hikes is from the village of Boca de Tomatlan heading south along a coastal path. After about a 4km walk is Playa Las Animas, a lovely long beach with numerous fresh seafood restaurants for snacks and lunch.
Its possible to continue this coastal path to see more little beaches and the tiny village of Quimixto, after a further 3km walk. I think the prettiest beaches were just before the village. Then I jumped in a boat taxi to take me back to Boca.
I found the town of Bucerias more relaxed and spent a few days here, with not a great deal to do except enjoy the beach and local food. I had fish tacos a few times, and every time they were fresh and tasty.
The surfing town of Sayulita is a little further north, and has become very popular the last couple of years. Walking around it gets quieter away from the town and this is where the beaches are better.
