Izamal is approximately 70 km east from Merida city in Yucatán. It is known as one of the ‘Pueblos Magicos’ or magic towns of Mexico.

It is easy to walk around the small town and see why it is magical. Many of the houses, shops, and the convent in the town centre are all painted in a golden yellow colour. It is perfect for a leisurely walk whilst photographing the colourful buildings.

In the centre of town the main feature is the impressive convent & monastery that first dates back to 1533. It is very striking and still in excellent condition to this day. There is also a sound and light show projected onto the convent at around 8 pm on Saturday night.

Finally here is the view from the remains of the Pirámide Kinich Kakmó looking back to the centre of the town.
